Early Years Foundation Stage
At Mulberry Roots, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the statutory framework for all early years settings in England. The EYFS gives every child a strong foundation through its seven areas of learning and ensures their safety, wellbeing and development are consistently supported. However, the EYFS is only the starting point for us. In 2025 we created our own bespoke curriculum in collaboration with highly experienced early years researchers and educational specialists. It is carefully designed to be ambitious, child centred and evidence based, drawing on respected international philosophies to offer children a richer, deeper and more meaningful learning experience than the statutory requirements alone.

Claire is our baby room leader and holds a Level 3 qualification with over 10 years of experience in early years, all spent with babies. She leads the room with calm confidence and always seems to know exactly what each baby needs, whether it’s a cuddle, a nap or a little sing-song. Claire has a natural gift for building warm, trusting relationships and an instinct for routines, milestones and moods. If a baby needs soothing or settling, Claire’s already there. W hen she’s not at nursery, Claire enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren, and is often found doing what she does best - babysitting all over again.

The Philosophies That Shape Our Practice
We draw significant inspiration from Te Whāriki, New Zealand’s pioneering early childhood curriculum created by Margaret Carr and Helen May. Widely recognised as one of the strongest and most influential early years frameworks in the world, Te Whāriki has shaped practice internationally. Scotland’s own leading early years guidance draws heavily from its principles, reflecting its strength, clarity and deep respect for the child.
Te Whāriki is built around the idea of a woven mat, symbolising the interconnected strands of identity, relationships, knowledge and culture that support each child’s learning journey. Its approach positions children as capable, curious and active participants rather than passive learners, and places strong emphasis on belonging, wellbeing, contribution, communication and exploration.
At Mulberry Roots we use these principles to shape our practice in meaningful, everyday ways. We listen carefully to children’s voices and respond to their interests, ideas and preferences. We build warm partnerships with families, recognising that learning is strongest when nursery and home work together. We value cultural identity and celebrate individual backgrounds so that each child feels secure, respected and proud of who they are. These foundations create an environment where children approach learning with confidence, curiosity and a strong sense of belonging.

"Mulberry Roots offers one of the most impressive early years curriculums I have ever seen. It is ambitious, extremely well researched, and clearly far ahead of what most nurseries are delivering. The way the EYFS is blended with international approaches such as Te Whāriki, Froebel, and Reggio Emilia creates a truly unique learning model that you can see reflected in the quality of children’s experiences and development. It is clear that every part of the curriculum has been carefully designed by people with a deep understanding of early childhood development and a genuine passion for current research. This is a curriculum that really stands out.”

Progression and Structure
Progression and Structure
Progression and Structure
Our curriculum is intentionally sequenced so that learning builds gradually and meaningfully as children grow. With babies and very young children we focus closely on the prime areas of the EYFS which include communication and language, physical development and personal, social and emotional development. As children move into toddlerhood and preschool, the specific areas of learning such as literacy, mathematics and understanding the world are more directly introduced through rich, real world experiences that feel purposeful and engaging.
We have clear targets for each age group which outline what children will explore, practise and progress towards. These targets guide our planning and ensure every child’s next steps are carefully supported. To learn more about the curriculum aims within each room, please speak to a member of staff who will be happy to share further details.
We recognise that progression is flexible and responsive rather than fixed. Every child’s learning journey is personalised to their developmental stage, interests and strengths to ensure progress that is both meaningful and secure. Our staff are highly trained in SEND and inclusive practice, ensuring all children receive the support, adaptations and encouragement they need to thrive.
